X Keyboard Shortcuts for Navigating Threads and Replies

X's web app has a full keyboard shortcut set for moving through your timeline, opening posts, and taking quick actions, all without touching the mouse. Press j and k to move down and up, o or Enter to open the focused post, and / to jump to search. They speed up scrolling and reacting, but once you are inside a busy reply thread, the same keys just walk you down a flattened list — they do not sort replies, reveal hidden ones, or keep your place across tabs.

Learn j, k, o, and l first. Together they cover most of a normal scrolling session: move to the next post, glance at it, like it if it's good, open it if it's worth reading in full. The g shortcuts are worth a second look too — most people only ever click the sidebar icons, but g then h, p, or any of the other jump combinations gets you to the same place without leaving the keyboard, which adds up over a long session.

Where shortcuts break down inside a thread

The moving keys are built for a flat feed, not a branching reply thread. Once you press o to open a post, j and k still work, but they walk you down whatever order X decided to show — the ranked "best" view by default — one reply at a time. They do not let you jump straight to the reply everyone is quoting, skip past a branch you already read, or search for a name inside a long thread.

Switching sort order, checking for replies hidden behind a "Show more" wall, and following a specific branch of a nested conversation all still require the mouse. 3. Use / to jump straight to search instead of clicking into the search bar first, especially when you are chasing a specific account or phrase.
